An authentic Valais stable surrounded by the nature of Flesch
Set within the distinctive landscape of Flesch on Riederalp, Chalet Bergblick is a former Valais barn that has been carefully converted into a welcoming mountain home while retaining much of its original character. The Flesch moorland lies in a small natural basin surrounded by dry alpine meadows, scattered larch trees and the impressive Valais mountains. This is Riederalp at its quieter and more authentic: away from the busier village centre, surrounded by nature, traditional buildings and wide mountain views.
At the same time, the chalet remains part of the car-free Aletsch Arena. In winter, Riederalp provides access to the extensive ski area connecting Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp. During summer, the surrounding landscape becomes a playground of hiking trails, alpine meadows and forests.
From barn to chalet
The original barn dates from 1954 and was extensively converted into a residential chalet between 1995 and 1997. Rather than hiding the building’s history, the conversion incorporated elements of the original structure into the new home.
This is particularly evident around the living and dining areas. What was once an exterior wall of the barn is now an interior feature. The aged, sun-weathered timber has been carefully treated and today creates a beautiful contrast with the original larch wood.
The chalet extends across three floors. The ground and attic floors are primarily dedicated to sleeping accommodation, while everyday life centres around the middle living floor.
Ground floor
Chalet Bergblick has two separate entrances. Entering on the ground floor, you first reach a generous unheated storage room – ideal for skis, bicycles, boots, outdoor clothing and other mountain equipment.
Beyond this space is the hallway and internal staircase. Two particularly spacious bedrooms are located on this level, together with a technical and laundry room and a bathroom featuring a combined bath and shower, washbasin and toilet.
Living floor
The first floor forms the heart of the chalet and has its own exterior entrance. The entrance area provides practical storage and space for shoes and jackets, while a separate guest toilet serves this floor.
From here, you enter the cosy living room. Its authentic lower ceiling is one of several subtle reminders of the property’s past as a traditional Valais barn. Combined with the extensive use of timber, it gives the room a particularly intimate atmosphere.
At the centre is the traditional stone stove. Besides being an attractive original feature, it provides an additional source of warmth for the chalet alongside the electric radiator heating.
The living room opens directly onto the balcony, where the view stretches across the Flesch moorland towards the surrounding Alps. Mountain meadows, larch trees and traditional buildings form an authentic foreground to the panorama.
Kitchen and dining area
The semi-open kitchen and dining area occupy the extension to the original barn. Here, the increased ceiling height creates a more open atmosphere, contrasting beautifully with the intimate proportions of the historic living room.
The large kitchen offers generous preparation space and plenty of room for cooking together. The adjoining dining area makes this part of the chalet a natural gathering place for long dinners after a day in the mountains.
One of its most distinctive features is the original exterior wall of the old barn, which is now an interior wall. Its weathered timber visually separates the historic structure from the later extension and gives the room a character that would be difficult to recreate in a modern building.
Attic floor
The uppermost floor provides a private principal sleeping area. The spacious bedroom includes a bed, large wardrobe and desk, while a second bathroom offers a shower, washbasin and toilet.
As a result, sleeping and bathroom facilities are distributed across both the ground and attic floors, leaving the middle level dedicated almost entirely to living, cooking and dining.
A mountain retreat with history
Standing on a plot of approximately 349 m², Chalet Bergblick offers a fundamentally different experience from a conventional holiday apartment. This is not a newly built chalet designed to look traditional; it is a genuine former Valais barn whose history remains visible throughout the house.
Its setting in Flesch complements that character. Here, the focus is on tranquillity, mountain meadows, larch trees and views rather than busy village life. Chalet Bergblick is therefore particularly suited to buyers looking for an authentic mountain retreat on Riederalp with generous sleeping accommodation, characterful architecture and a strong connection to its surroundings.
